Hi Samuel.....not really....I was hoping people would share their hybrid experiences.

I pretty much self-manage at work. I have my main task, but also get involved in stuff that takes my interest, as long as it doesn't get in the way of my main task.

My boss doesn't give my tasks that often; since I'm passionate about my job I make up my own tasks...I know what has to be done and improvements...so he ends up monitoring and leading me.

Lately he has given me a few tasks which are very exciting (since he knows what I like and what I'm good at)

Interesting and LONG post, John. Do you know of companies that are already experimenting with swarming (let people decide for themselves what they are going to work on or select a project from a list by themselves)?

Open source communities are a great place to watch these principles in action. There, leaders don’t dole out assignments; programmers work on problems they find to be the most interesting. Once projects are finished, code is peer reviewed, tested, and improved. The leader’s job in this environment is to check in “approved” patches so that there’s no confusion over what is ready for use and what is in progress. This workflow can apply to any project work.

Community management takes more time than traditional management, but the payoff, when it’s done successfully, is higher productivity because people are pursuing the work they’re most interested in, selecting how they participate, and opportunistically solving problems. It’s the transition from a parental perspective of management to a partnership model. In this environment, the leader’s job is to maintain the boundaries around what is productive for the organization, monitor the gaps, encourage individuals to fill gaps, and facilitate the integration.

My gosh .. there sure are lot of people saying the same thing (and a range of variations of the implications).

As you know, John .. much of where we are quickly coming to has been building for a long, long time .. and there is (or will be) a lot of undoing, unlearning and re-learning that will be necessary as we all walk, work and link our respective way(s) through this massive transition.
