Hi Ron,

Thanks for dropping by.

I'll check out that carbon calculator. I've seen a few of those around http://www.zerofootprint.net/

Also check out ilinc's greenmeter which calculates emissions of travel compared to web conferencing http://www.ilinc.com/greenmeter

Now that we have IM, presence/status updates, forums, blogs and wikis we can get a feel of what people are doing right now, and are able to connect to them in an instant. We also need less meetings as we can use blogs and forums to discuss things (we no longer have to be in real-time to update each other...plus blogs and forums live at a place where people can visit and provide input...perpetual discussions)

Found an interesting Australian site that calculates how much carbon you could save using telecommunications instead of traveling. Check it out! http://www.nowwearetalking.com.au/carbon

A couple years ago I made the decision to work from home. It was rough at first, but now I couldn't imagine it any other way! Telecommunication has definitely made the switch easier. I've had success with the teleconferencing company Vesta Networks. http://www.vestanetworks.com/index.php. I think we'll be seeing a lot more people telecommuting in the future.

My boss just sent me an awesome quote

From Brian Dyson, ex CEO Coca-Cola

"Life is like juggling 5 balls:

work
family
friends
health &
spirit
work is made of rubber, the rest are made of glass."

Joitske,

How true that is?

That definitely is a good reason for the opportunity to WFH.

Actually I'm working from home today, as my pregnant wife is coming close to her due date, she's experiencing new pains, so needs some re-assurance of someone being close by.

I'm fortunate that my boss is open about this as he knows I can still achieve my daily tasks from home. I login remotely and am on phone and instant messaging (even video cam).
This is not a "just because I can scenario", it's only when personal life needs attending. WFH allows me to balance both work and personal life.

Teleworking for me is not a black or white thing. I like the shade of grey, where I know it's accepted if I need to WFH for a couple of days/weeks as my personal life demands I be at home. I'd like to know that we have a telework option, where our work has formally accommodated for these scenarios.

I may look into asking them.

As for a semi-permanent WFH scenario, well that's a more serious consideration for business to think about, and I think my post addresses some of these things.
