Reading your post I realized that what you need is what ProjectOffice.net has. It is a online project management tool offering project and task management (only people assigned to a project or task can see them), time and expense management, wikis and issue tracking. You should definitely check it out.
If you have any question, please do not hesitate to contact me via e-mail.

Aditya,

I didn't know about Deskaway, thanks for that.

Yeah I guess tasks are best done using task oriented products like deskaway.

But as you say community products are similar, only they don't have a robust task workflow aspect.

Just the same, for simple shared tasks you can use a wiki as your task list.

I guess part of my point depends on how many members you have in your community/team space.

If you have 5 members, then I think doing tasks within the community space will be OK.
But if you have 50 members in your community, tasks in the community aren't really polite, as the community homepage will be polluted with the latest from the task blogs and task forums...and this type of information may not be of interest for your general community.

This is why I suggested a separate space.
But this is only according to my experience of using OpenText Communities. As I mentioned in the post all content in a community is re-syndicated to the homepage.

So my idea was to use the same community tools in a simpler template called Task Rooms, and link to them from our community.

Hey, if we want to buy something like Deskaway, then even better...but we are making most of what we have, and community tools can get you buy for doing tasks.

I think task products often double up as community products. the biggest drawback of Google Sites is its interface. Its easy but not easy enough for everyone. I've been using Deskaway for sometime now and i do think that it does strengthen the presence of 'community' - especially if you give every member the liberty to create and contribute. The essence is collaboration. I think as of now - task based products such as Deskaway and Zoho are perfect for both community management and task management. The only thing lacking maybe is a chat app. Apart from that, there are innumerable sharing opportunities. Google sites is great but for task management it falls back.
