<description>but if your email tool is smart and you are smart and use the features to their full potential.... then suddenly email IS your communication dashboard. or at least your email app is. and its easy to point to stuff like gmail and other advanced web based email services to drive this point home.

it's not &quot;email&quot; as the culprit. email is just a communication protocol.
it's how email is used by most.... which typically pays no attention to organization features (whether user chooses not to learn how to use them or they just are not adequate in the app itself).

for me, gmail IS my hub. and i get annoyed when web services do not provide more than simple alerts of their system's communication activity. I should not have to login to every site the read/view the message/content/media.

Granted, my email hub is primarily an input hub and my output is primarily private or work related group mailings. but that is not to say that technology cannot allow for me to post back content to services via email. the reason its not common is simple. page views and advertisement and site metrics. ALL these neo communication services are trying to hit critical mass so they dont want you to just live in your email inbox.... it doesnt help them reach their goals as much.

Your post makes good points about using other tools for certain types of communication. However, email is not the culprit. It's like saying religion should be abolished when in fact it should be evolved. ok, maybe not a good analogy but thats another topic i have been on recently so it bled in here ;)

What i do know for certainty is that social-spam is here today and too many people are swimming happily in it. is that good? maybe. it can be. for some. but overall.... i cannot help but to see that negative side of all this chaos that services are tapping in to and adding to. it's tired, as wired would state.

email is good. RSS to email is killer. smart email apps are wonderful. anti-spam tech has evolved to the point where i just dont get much of it at all (again, gmail user here). email makes sense on so many levels... shit, i can even output my email inbox as xml and/or pipe it to a script that inserts it to a database where i can then present it to the world on a web page.... yeah email. nothing wrong with it. just takes creativity, good tools and good tech and good users to make it shine.
