Imagine this type of thing with elements of our profiles stretching into all areas of interest and creating ad hoc groups for discussion, so we could have both explicit social networks and implicit ones.

Because yeah, RSS has done a wonder about allowing us access to  streams, but little for the way we can aggregate groups from within those streams. 

As you say, that's where social networks shine, but we need to access that in a distributed way. Open Sical? Maybe, but the jury is still out.
