Librarians : network enablers

This was going to be a comment in Dave Snowden’s blog post (which was a comment about one of my posts) but it has turned into a blog post.
It’s basically riffing on Dave’s comment about librarians having the real KM attitude of being people connectors, which gets knowledge flowing.

It also connects to a few library oriented posts I have published lately,

I’m in document management at the moment, but in my previous corporate librarian role a big part was in researching and sourcing information for staff, as well as updating people on the latestest in their industry.

This results in the librarian knowing the interests of lots of people in the organisation. We have to capitalise on this as we are one of the few people in the organisation who knows who likes what…so we introduce these people that have common interests, this is especially interesting if it’s cross disciplinary.

Introducing and linking people slowly creates a network, the librarian is overworked, but hopefully the network will start to manifest its own connections, but how will this happen (assuming people want to network) without enabling technologies.

Currently, and in most instances, people that have been introduced sustain their new relationship by sharing information by email, they might invite others to their informal group. This technology doesn’t provide a way to bump into others who may be interested in sharing this topic based information, in this situation we are still limited to physical connections a la the librarian.
The other part is that since this relationship doesn’t have a place (like a forum/CoP or profile pages) it may not sustain connectivity.

I wish I was using Google Reader in those days, as I could subscribe to various feeds related to a staff members interests and tag those subscriptions in a folder with that persons name. When I’m reading the feeds in that folder I tag useful items and they appear on a public page.
That person can bookmark that page or subscribe to it’s feed for daily updates.
But once they are updated, it becomes static, unless they email a link to someone else…there are better ways.

How can the librarian do this for everyone?

…instead people need to learn how to find feeds (librarians can still do their job of sourcing quality feeds) and use an RSS Reader themselves, and do their own bookmarking or link blogging.
Others can perhaps subscribe to their bookmarks or link blog feeds, and perhaps visit their public RSS Reader to see the feeds they read.

Plus people need to then push the information they are reading elsewhere, this works OK in email, but what is more effective is a more open and connected environment.

Explode this into a social network, and we all have profiles (listing expert tags), we have a blog, we add friends, compare feeds, subscribe to each others bookmarks, send links to each others, updated on friends activity, send private and public messages.
This is a sense of place that solidifies our relationship and interests, but much more than a group page, as it’s a profile network, endless connections and discovery can be made, it’s more an ecosystem.

See an RSS Reader social network like FeedEachOther, a Lifestream/people network like Ziki and Mugshot groups, link sharing networks, link blogs like and Siphs and Google Shared Stuff, collaborative recommendation, or everyone’s darling of 2007, Facebook.

Social networks can now replace the librarian being the people connector; RSS Readers enable people to read content from both internal and external feeds, we can send links to our friends, discover people, and now we have blogs to share thoughts and feedback and to spread and discuss news that we read.

These technologies are much more enabling, in the past the librarian would create various topic newsletters for various audiences, I guess now we could call this topic blogging and bookmarking.
Now everyone can do it for themselves, they can subscribe to content, do their own blogging and bookmarking and we can subscribe to each other (our trust filter, common abstraction, shared context) in a network and share and communicate.
This connection is with trusted people, we can also discover people and content (capitalise on weak ties).

So perhaps Dave Snowden is right…librarians being people connectors are what KM is about…creating knowledge flow.

The librarian can take a sigh of relief and let the network do its thing, and once again the librarian becomes the facilitator.

Knowledge sharing in the new KM

Lately I’ve posted on the need for the enterprise to not use email for everything, and the enabling tools that are more appropriate, especially network centric tools that add the dimension of getting things done via informal circles without relying on just your close colleagues and your hierarchy.

Since my last post on this topic I’ve been listening to more from Dave Snowden’s podcast archive (and plenty more to go).

Here are some slides that encapulate these new insights and methods.

The 5 podcasts I’ve just listened to…actually let me tell you, I’ve listened to some of these at least 3 times. Dave says some provoking stuff, yet it’s only because it goes counter to past knowledge management approaches, plus it has taken a while for me to absorb this great stuff as it’s a shift of mind set to a more practical or usable approach.

Dave alludes to an individual centric, fragmented, trust based, naturalistic knowledge sharing culture…more so just-in-time knowledge (and sense-making), based on small circles of people you trust, connected in a social network environment.
Of course there is a lot more to these podcasts, complexity and all, but I’m mostly focusing on the knowledge sharing aspect.

Another way of looking at it is moving from a content to a context approach.

Dave says that management science is based on information processing, which is not how humans make sense of the world. Instead he brings the natural sciences to management, based on a system/methodology more in tune with our cognitive process.

In a post from a while back I used the term Organic KM (from one of Dave Snowden’s papers).
Back then, when I was new to this concept, reading these papers was not an ideal shared context for me, after reading the more informal blog posts, listening to audio and the process of writing this post, I understand the concepts much more.

This is the essence of what this post is about, it’s an organic approach (experimental more than designed), the system being a servant to the human, enabling things to manifest and emerge, which we then harness or dampen.

Jack Vinson has pointed out on his Future of KM post, that Dave Snowden is impressed with social computing and says that if these tools and their emergent freeform nature were around when knowledge management was kicking in, they would help achieve what we actually expected and wanted from managing knowledge.

The new KM (perhaps KM 2.0)

Just a quick summary of what this post is essentially about…

The new thinking is does knowledge actually have to be managed, perhaps it being more on the flow and connection between people.
In fact Dave mentions that knowledge management may be in its decline, to a more naturalistic approach of sense-making “how do I make sense of the world and act in it”.

This makes sense (pardon the pun), in the web 2.0 world we often call what we do “social computing”, we are sharing thoughts and forming networks and communities. There is no effort involved, it’s totally natural, yet we don’t think of it as managing knowledge, instead we constantly share our thoughts/experiences/opinions, not just because it’s related to a deliverable, but because it’s a personal and cultural thing. When we want to know something we search the blogosphere or ask our network (we also monitor our interests by subscribing to blogs and connecting to people).

What I like about blogs in contrast to just documents, is that blogs can act as a quality filter for gems in the Document Management System (DMS). If you are wondering if a document on a topic exists are you going to go solo and search the DMS, or search the enterprise blogs to see if anyone has posted and pointed to such a document.
Your search in the DMS may result in 100 documents, your search in blogs may bring up 2 hits pointing to documents; the fact that someone is pointing to these posts may say something good or bad about the quality, it’s the fact they were worthy (good or bad) of a mention.
This approach is taking the first choice of dipping into the social filter before going it alone, and that’s not all, you not only get a pointer to a quality document, but you get extra perspective around the document.

The killer message of this post is “…creating a knowledge sharing culture is a misconception”.

But first, here are Dave’s 3 heuristics of KM, taken from here:

“1. Knowledge can only be volunteered, it can never be conscripted
- you can’t make someone use or share their knowledge if they don’t want to

2. We only know what we know when we need to know it
- knowledge is highly contextual and is recalled in context, not in abstract

3. We always know more than we can tell and we will always tell more than we can write down
- some things can only be known through experience, narrative forms of knowledge dominate, explicit …”

Focusing on knowledge sharing, these other points are mentioned:

1. If people need knowledge in the “context” of need it will always be shared
- people will share in the context of your immediate need

2. People don’t share knowledge in the anticipation that you need it
- if you ask people (perhaps someone you may not know) to put it in a common data store for a possible need in the future, on the basis you might need it…it just doesn’t happen.

So how are blogs different?

Firstly, you are not asking people to share it, as with these new social tools and attitude there hopes to be a naturalistic approach where the culture shares what’s happening in blogs as regular as they use email. In the open blogosphere I don’t consciously blog to share, I just blog as a natural extension of keeping notes, the great thing is people see these notes and discuss, etc…
Then as you go on, you find that you may indeed blog to share, poke, invoke discussion, as you have your soapbox, where you make sense of the world, people visit and help you figure out the world.

What’s lacking in codification

More from Dave:

Building systems built on idealistic models of sharing are fundamentally flawed

The tacit-explicit model fails to understand the nature of the human act of knowing.
The essence is lots when trying to codify tacit information
- too much effort in trying to express what you know
- shared context is assumed, but instead it is context heavy
- low abstraction with knowledge holder, not in tune with their thinking as you don’t have much in common (language, education, morals, values, beliefs, experiences)
- there is more accurate expression at time of knowledge compared to more abstracted hindsight (this is where field work/mentoring/shadowing/narrative/apprentice/social computing helps)
- in the end it becomes difficult to decipher without the knowledge holder

Social Computing and Narrative are the new “knowledge sharing”

From the above, social computing could be seen as the direct alternative to codification as they are both written down. But social computing enables and manifests a behaviour to share information as it happens, in a very quick and simple, and unstructured way…plus these items and people are all connected in informal networks.

What I like is that anecdotes are raw data, others can read/listen and draw their own conclusions, everyone may get something different (most often knowledge diffusion will occur). This is like the beauty of poetry and myths, anecdotes are not as subject to time (like codification), they last the ages (forever applicable), they can be useful to other disciplines…on second thought perhaps myths are more storytelling.

Trust/Informal networks

Dave continues…

Reality is; sharing is based on trust
Trust is nurtured and grown overtime, it can’t be designed
Trust exists in small network groups, not at an organisational level

If you want to manage knowledge, you need to manage small network interactions…you don’t manage stuff at a global organisational level.

A social computing environment enables you to network a circle of high abstraction in turn creating exchanges of shared context, this is knowledge flow…Dave says that web 2.0 “…makes the context in which you receive and filter information and knowledge more critical, partly because you can control that context by exchanging with people you already know and trust

My post on informal networks hones in on exactly these points…mostly a shared context needs to exist for a successful transfer of information, and a circle of high abstraction is the ideal environment.

Web 2.0 achieves all these things without trying to be knowledge management:
- self assemble
- self organising
- RSS Reader and social network (filtered trust)

Dave goes on to say that Web 2.0 makes context in which you receive and filter information more critical:
- as you control the context, as it’s coming from people you know and trust
- it moves knowledge outside the corporate control
- rewards neglect the trust factor…need to share for the right reason

Informal networks are more successful over formal networks, as you are free to choose who you read and discuss (trust)…are we moving from CoPs to informal social networks.

So again, you can’t create a knowledge sharing culture:
- you can increase the interactions between people
- you can increase their interdependency
- you can increase immediacy of their KM request

This is largely a just-in-time concept that is able to execute based on knowledge flow (in essence blogging) and networks (social network connections and subscriptions-people filter).

Dave’s future of knowledge sharing is:
- it’s not something subject to organizational objectives
- the role of the KM dept will be absorbed everywhere
- the role of IT will be to create connectivity between people
(connect people and km will look after itself)

In essence you are creating the ecology of knowledge flow, the shift from object to context.

CONCERNS

Even though this is a more naturalistic approach, will all people blog and network?

I look at it this way, we already have email contacts, a network is making these contacts more dynamic into a connected system…it’s a no brainer. Those not taking part will feel disconnected and will therefore hookup.

Your productivity dashboard will have an RSS reader and a blog, these will be features of the network system…very non-threatening as a feature compared to scaring people with a brand new standalone blogging product.

Once in a knowledge flow networked system, you can explore, discover and capitalize on the social capital to get things done, especially your weak ties.
As I said in a previous post, I really don’t know what Outlook is waiting for…if blogging and networking were part of the familiar territory that is Outlook, these tools would be less threatening as they would be considered normal.

Busyness

Andrew McAfee mentions that new social tools may be seen as unproductive, and people may be too busy anyway.
Tom Mandel mentions people have always used new technology and social tools to get things done, eg. phone, fax, PC,email, IM, etc…and Luis Suarez chimes in that maybe we should move to group performance.
Joe McKendrick eloquently states the paradox, alluding to, are you going to risk the opportunity to make more widgets over spending time collaborating and networking which may result in making better and more widgets via a new innovation…the answer was in the air waiting for the social captial to synergise and manifest it.
Anne Zelenka brings home the comparison between busyness and burstyness workers types.
All of this talk leads to ROI, but that’s for another time.

The next 2 points are from a Kathleen Gilroy podcast interview with Andrew McAfee.

Transparency

Managers may only want contributions that are appropriate to their level on the Org chart.
They may not want someone lower to have input at the same level, or at the worst refine or overrule contributions…this is a decentralised decision environment.
For social computing (networking) and sense-making to take place in the enterprise, this transparency factor is a huge obstacle to overcome or swallow. Tom Davenport doesn’t think KM 2.0 alone will transform culture.
Andrew McAfee tends to agree that org charts will not be thrown out, the main benefit will be idea percolation, crowd sourcing, etc…this is basically a result of having bottom up knowledge sharing tools.
Tom Mandel adds that enterprise work (changes in the way we work ) doesn’t equal organization of enterprises (changes in org structure)…time will tell. Luis Suarez isn’t budging on the matter.

In comparison to the enterprise, web 2.0 and the blogosphere is an egalitarian environment, there is no org chart, even if there was, no one cares, all people are treated equal.
That’s not to say that cliques and A-lists will form, where the popular people only link to each other or an A-lister will get credit for breaking news that was already published earlier by a lesser know blogger…but this is all human nature.

Another danger for management is a revolt, see the Digg revolt.

Network Effects

On the open web there is room for the long tail as there are enough people to make it scale, but in the enterprise the long tail is too small (there’s not enough people for there to be a long tail).
We see network effects as the aggregated value from all the individual contributions, plus the distributed discussion propagates this as well, then we can look into emerging patterns, this is the beauty of free form personal publishing, it has a greater value.

Again we come to knowledge sharing culture, people need to contribute, not just consume, otherwise we will not get the network effect. If we don’t have a fuller participative enterprise, then the social content will not manifest into great things.
In the enterprise if we have only a 1% participation rate from 10,000 people that’s only a 100 people blogging, will this generate a network effect, it may for a topic, but not the system as a whole.
In contrast on the web a 1% participation rate may be millions of people, enough scale for network effects to happen.

So it comes back to visibility and coaching, and a naturalistic approach.

Knowledge sharing?

Do we call it knowledge sharing, maybe not, that’s the result amongst other things, but what we are actually explicitly doing is not sharing, we are publishing fragments, it just turns out its being shared at the same time.
This perspective takes away the task or conscription aspect of having to do something for the greater good, and turns it into personal publishing for your benefit that everyone can also see. I guess this is the del.icio.us lesson, besides ease of use, personal benefit must be the primary reason you are bookmarking or blogging something, public benefit is just a bonus, and what a bonus it is, we get discussion and emergent patterns.

We publish and collect, people subscribe to us as their trust filter and the result is sharing and discussion. But we may also explicitly and directly share by sending someone links or asking a question. Because of blogs and networks we may know who to ask the question to as we are in a connected environment where we are aware of what people know, or our circle of trust can point us to someone.
It reminds me of the web, but instead people are the hyperlinks, pointing others to another person (page).

Browsing some blogs via my social filter I came across a post by James Robertson (who I subscribe to anyway) titled, Knowledge sharing’ should be avoided. James points out that the jargon and the act of knowledge sharing just doesn’t gel with people, it doesn’t rock their boat, they are not enthusiastic.
I think this is due to there not being a direct benefit, we only do things-most of the time-where our time spent is towards achieving something (for ourselves or not).
Six months after codifying and knowledge sharing an individual looks back and thinks, why am I doing this, is it being used, I’ve gone to the trouble to write these items for any type of audience that encounters them.
James says we should avoid the term altogether and put it into a more focused actions like ‘reduce processing errors’.
Knowledge sharing needs to happen as a result of doing something you are trying to achieve, not just for the sake of knowledge sharing. When you blog, you publish news or updates, successes, difficulties on your project, you point to other places…you do all this for the here and now, and it means something to you, it helps you through your day, your thinking out loud…

Sense-making is where it comes full circle (best practices or pattern matching fragments)

More from Dave…

Humans act on fragmented patterns, not information processing.
When faced with a hard issue or task, is our instinct to go for best practices or round up several people with experience that you trust?
We don’t go to best practices, we go for fragmented anecdotes
- they are context independent, more resilient and flexible than codification

eg. when faced by a lion, we don’t remember best practices, we pattern match narrative fragments and blend them into our decision (and escape hopefully)…this is sense-making.

Then you blend these fragments with your own context to create new patterns and ways of thinking, ultimately creating decision pathway forward.
Whereas codified knowledge may not transfer to someone else as it is too context specific, structured and more relevant to the time…instead you have more a shared context with people you trust and know (as you have a higher level of abstraction with your immediate circle). Without shared context and common abstraction (eg. education, experiences, background, etc…), knowledge to someone else may be data to you…without the shared interpretive framework you can’t successfully internalize it as knowledge.

The example was given of being able to relate more to raw war stories and anecdotes over a codified document on the war.
This is key for me, even though I agree there is room for codified documents of a particular nature, when it comes to sharing personal knowledge and thoughts it’s not as effective in diffusion.

If I read a codified document (context heavy) I will find it hard to identify in order to get something out of it for my purpose or context. If these were anecdotes, they are more open and less decided or contextual, this gives more chance to trigger something for me, it gives my mind space to “jam” with what I’m reading, “riff” on it to spur other ideas.

Sharing anecdotes and fragments by blogging and sharing sessions are just that, you are not trying to codify, you are just sharing a moment, the essence is kept intact. The benefit of this is that an anecdote can be internalised by different people different ways, whereas a codified document is meant to be internalised or transferred one way and that’s it, if successful it becomes knowledge to you.
Whereas a blog post or anecdote (fragment) can spur innovation, they are like images (they are vivid), they are not trying to convey one narrow point, 10 people can get 10 different feelings or internal knowledge from an anecdote compared to a codified document which is trying to convey a fixed signal.

eg. sharing anecdotes of safety failures will have lots more impact and a lasting effect than just relying on a codified safety manual.

Also when we don’t understand something, an example or situation always makes the point clearer, an anecdote is even better, especially in recall…just recall the anecdote and then derive the concepts in the anecdote (rather than trying to remember concepts).

Dave gives a great example of a map (codified), a map may plot points, but someone who knows the area will know the quickest way to get somewhere, areas to avoid, etc. There is no way this dynamic tacit stuff can be codified into a map, this shared context only comes from people or fragments…the map assumes shared context which is not present.

Speed or Quality

The premise of this post is that codification (tacit to explicit) is a much more cumbersome technique in sharing what’s inside your head and being able to transfer shared context. Instead it’s very context heavy and has less profound recall of actual event, with the notion of knowledge as things. Whereas networks and unstructured content (freeform blogs) are simple and fast, story/fragments (more context independent), and based on the notion of knowledge flow.

Added to this is the dynamic nature of these items (comments/trackbacks), and a profile based expert system where people can connect to each other, it’s very emergent and self assembled.

As mentioned the premise isn’t to share knowledge, it’s just a by product of doing work eg. personal publishing, discussion and networking in an open system.

Just to mix it up a bit more, a recent paper by Knowledge@Wharton called Does Knowledge Sharing Deliver on Its promises says the choice between accessing people or codified documents depends on the task, and whether you want speed or quality.

From the paper:
“We find that using codified knowledge in the form of electronic documents saved time during the task, but did not improve work quality or signal competence to clients, whereas in contrast, sharing personal advice improved work quality and signaled competence, but did not save time,” Haas says. “This is interesting because managers often believe that capturing and sharing knowledge via document databases can substitute for getting personal advice, and that sharing advice through personal networks can save time. But our findings dispute the claim that different types of knowledge are substitutes for each other. Instead, we show that appropriately matching the type of knowledge used to the requirements of the task at hand — quality, signaling or speed — is critical if a firm’s knowledge capabilities are to translate into improved performance of its projects.”

Dave points out that it compares codified documents to network advice, what about fragmented anecdotes and blogs compared to asking people.
The other point is that observation always produces different results to surveys (subjects understand the hypothesis).

More notes

This post is focusing on the knowledge sharing aspect of KM, but these podcasts went into much more, here are the rest of my notes:

Most effective knowledge exists in flows…contextually created in the time of need

And this beauty:
“Knowledge is the real-time assembly of multiple fragmented memories in a real-time context to create a new unique application”

You can’t knowledge audit fragments, rather than create an audit of what you know, create a map of dependencies of your core business processes or knowledge objects.
Then create a small portfolio of projects of
- single process highly dependent on many objects or vice versa
A knowledge object is anything coherent that we can see how we can manage

eg. gather anecdotes…index them based on types of decisions present in the anecdotes
- allows to create decision clusters (anecdotes to create context so people can understand what happens in a decision)
- then go to people who make those decisions and ask them what was involved when they made this decision (based on the ASCHEN model).
- what artifacts are in use, skills, rules of thumb, experiences people need to make a decision in this space, natural talent (what makes some people better at this)
- re-cluster this to knowledge objects
This is creating coherent clusters of things that can be managed…it’s designing structure on what happens and how things are done…it’s a bottom-up knowledge objects and top-down processes.

People will tag things more conceptually, where the terms may not even appear in the content.

Anecdotes and self indexing by the people gives us a tag cloud where we can click on a term (decision based word) and read anecdotes that used those types of decisions. The overall tag cloud (storyscape) gives a visual view of frequency of anecdotes and decisions, revealing patterns and weak signals.
Whereas best practices try to tell you what to do rather than put together the pieces yourself (which is also more empowering).

Paradigm change
- semi structure tagging
- fragmented blogosphere (designed like our brains work)

Relationship model…social computing is more cow and grass, rather than cow and chicken if presented with all 3.

Use catalysts to create attractor mechanisms
- if patterns form it becomes an attractor that sucks in activity
- reinforce good ones, and disrupt bad ones

Manage emerging coherence with attractors within boundaries

Not just telling people what to do, just creating an environment to see what happens…safe-fail not fail-safe

Fail-Safe
- good for process based system where you know user requirements in advance of building the system
- in KM you can’t know requirements until people use the system
- people don’t know system they want till they get it, then they want something else…as the capability of these systems exceed our capacity to imagine its use till we have used it
- need to switch from Fail-Safe Design to Safe-Fail experimentation (self organization)
- social computing allows experimentation as it’s so cheap or free

Traditional Management
- study successful CoPs
- then try and replicate outcome into other situations
ie identify best practice by study of current practice, produce a recipe for a desired outcome, then replicate successful outcomes in other environments…this is a copy culture (case study)
- you can’t replicate outcomes, but you can replicate starting conditions
ie you produce a contextually appropriate solution

Further to this people learn more effectively from failures, they have more impact.

Assumption of traditional Management Science
- if we see things we will make rational decisions based on available data.
- but humans aren’t information processors, we are pattern matches
eg. Gorilla present in a video clip is not seen if you are concentrating on processing the task ,meaning you have not scanned the environment properly as we are not natural or exhaustive information processors (unless you are autistic)
- the most you can scan of available information is 5 - 10%

KM assumption
- world is a series of dots and you join the dots from previous experiences
- make a decision based on patterns in long term memory and 1st pattern (not best fit) is applied

What is this all about anyway?
- Improve decision making (How do we get people to make better decision)
- Improve conditions for innovation

Knowledge Economy
- it’s not what you own, it’s speed of exploitation (how you use what you have access to)
- the more you share the more you get

So how do we remember all the information in these podcasts?

If you remember the anecdotes and examples, the concepts will then follow…wish I used anecdotes to remember concepts in exams when I was a youngster.

It’s quite clever that Dave Snowden is using the very concepts that he is teaching in the teaching process/delivery…there must be a word for that.

Here are some of the anecdote titles and concepts:

Lunarr - create a document, load from your desktop, even a website or online document, for a document review instead of emailing it, just flip it over and leave a note for a collaborator, this also holds version history and related files…doesn’t have inline editing. vozMe - enter text or cut ‘n paste some text and it will generate an instant mp3 file…also get it as an iGoogle gadget.

timeline - create a timeline, when you click on an event it loads an information box, also get the time line as a vertical list…there is an about profile for the timeline and tags, people can leave comments. Share the timeline as a URL or widget, and get related timelines.
It’s also a social network as you have a user profile, add friends, private msg, created timelines, favourite timelines, and collaborative groups.

Just as exciting is a timeline for your blog via entering your RSS feed, see an example of TechCrunch. Now this would be handy to do with your Twitter feed.

Crowdvine for conference : social networking and matching

A little while back I posted on conferences using web 2.0 tools to bring user generated content to the homepage eg. a communal Twitter account, a Flickr tag, a Technorati tag…one conference brought all this together in a groupstream (as opposed to a one person lifestream).
Only problem with this is what if some people don’t use Flickr, how to you cater for the other 20 photo services. Technorati Tags takes care of the whole blogosphere, but then I guess it also does video, photo’s and bookmarks (last time I looked)…but I wonder how much of the photosphere, vidospehere, podosphere, bookmarkosphere it covers…sorry about all the spheres.

The other approach was using a product like Clearspace where attendees can do all their blogging and share photo’s/documents and network…I seem to think that the former aggregation model is better for a bigger conference as people like using their exisiting tools for all their content. I also mentioned matching services like Intronetworks as a way for people to meet like people.

TechCrunch points to Crowdvine (white label hosted social network) new product called Crowdvine for Conferences, this brings together all of what I’ve mentioned above. It is a space to network and share content, and it also aggregates content from 3rd party services, and you can even request to meet people, and it has teamed up with Pathable to provide a matching feature (everyone fills in a profile, the database works out who you are similar to, on event day you are given a badge labelling your tags and related people). Another matching tool is Attendr.

Another tool Confabb is more like a hosted page for your conference details, each conference has a disussion forum, and there is also a space to aggregate content about that conference via tags from Technorati, YouTube, Flickr, del.icio.us, etc…there are over 50,000 conferences listed.

Why did I become a librarian?

A post from yesterday on Library 2.0 got a comment from Suelibrarian, she re-phrased something I was trying to say for the better (that’s the thing about blogging sometimes, it’s so quick to publish you don’t really go over things much, as there is something to publish round the corner).

Anyway Sue put it “…being a librarian didn’t shape us that way- we become librarians because we are shaped that way”.

Now this got me thinking, why did I become a librarian?

Even though I don’t currently work in a library, I’m still a librarian through and through.

NOTE: Since I no longer follow the biblioblogosphere I’m not sure if this meme has done the rounds…

When I was changing career from the film/music industry and I wanted to work somewhere that reminded me of the open space and and peacefulness of the cinema, the library came to mind.

Ever since a kid I’ve always been a researcher (as is my brother), whatever topic we were exploring we had to read old and new books on the topic, actually we were bibliography hoppers, we had to explore authenticity by reading everything in the bibliography of every book (checking sources like a detective)…how did a writer come to their conclusions-who were they heavily influenced by, etc…

I think our interest in reading and researching mostly came about because we had the whole Britannica encyclopedia in our bedroom, as it didn’t fit anywhere else in the house…so we’d research all night on existential philosophers like Swedenbourg, Nietzsche, Sartre, Huxley…or plant medicines…Atlantis…etc…

Anyway, when we are interested in something we have this addictive nature to know everything about it, and become quite emersed…it’s quite a burden.

I’ve always organised my music, video’s (even clothes at one stage) into categories…this is the sure sign of a librarian…I think being a Virgo helps as well.

Lastly, I have a nature to update people about the latest about stuff.
As I mentioned when I’m into a topic I’m emersed, so when I was into the Melbourne music/film scene I worked in a eclectic video shop, played in a band and went to underground shops. I’d let my friends know what was happening most nights (there is so much art/media culture in Melbourne).

So when it comes to the web, I’m the same, I come across so much information, that if I see a blog post on real estate, I can’t let it slip, so I send it to a friend.

I haven’t mentioned anything selfless here, like helping people…yikes!

And I am not a typical introvert or extrovert (actually I’m kind of in the middle), I’m quite vocal in the company of people I know.
It astounds me that the librarian archetype of the stern older lady with her glasses hanging from her chest shhhhhing people, is still in the general psyche. And that people who don’t frequent libraries think they are stale, boring and for bookworms or geeks. Libraries are essential as too many people are being entertained these days instead of entertaining themselves. Our society has more than ever before got this fetish with celebrity and entertainment culture, this illusion of intimacy, and just being the passive spectator (viewer).
This is not a good thing, people can become bored easily, are not as creative, cannot entertain themselves, leading to frustration, etc…

Anyway, they are the basic qualities:

- perpetual organising and categorising
- open space and sanctuary
- researcher
- information consumer
- messenger

Coming full circle this comment rings true, “…being a librarian didn’t shape us that way- we become librarians because we are shaped that way”.

Library 2.0 local

I’m so addicted to podcasts lately, I can’t walk to and from work these days without listening to my own personal radio station.

Yesterday I listened to an On The Pod episode with Kathryn Greenhill about Library 2.0.
Kathryn has the blog Librarians Matter and is also part of the multi-author blog Libraries Interact (anyone is welcome to register and become and author, just like a Cit J site like Perth Norg, infact I think they both work on the WordPress Multi-user platform).

Anyway, it turns out that I followed Kathryn on Twitter, but not her blog (I am now a subscriber of her blog being impressed by the podcast). A couple of weeks earlier I also found another aussie librarian blog the same way, I was following HeyJude on Twitter and now have subscribed to her blog.

This is quite a refreshing experience for me, over a year ago I moved from Libraries to Document Management, so I’ve lost touch will all things library 2.0, dropping 50 or so blogs I used to read. I’m subscribed to only a handful now, but I don’t really read them that often, but now with two cutting edge aussie library blogs I’m happy to know what’s happening on a more local scale.

Out of interest the library blogs I read nowadays apart from the two already mentioned are Tame The Web, The Distant Librarian, Information wants to be Free, and ResourceShelf.

My blog posts used to be library oriented, as you would expect coming from a blog called Library clips, but now my posts are more about web 2.0 tools, the user generated web and the participative culture…also knowledge management. Check out the Library category on my blog.

Back to it…

The podcast was not just on Library 2.0, it also touched on the modern library and librarian in general…plus an extensive portion on a library’s experience on SecondLife.

Kathryn mentioned it all started with RSS and then she was thrown into a new world, where she adopted social tools such as blogs, Flickr, wikis, and toolbars such as LibX for FireFox (search your catalogue from the toolbar or right-click, click articles in Google Scholar that are available in your library, or click on an ISBN to see if your library has that book).

A few interactive web 2.0 ideas were patrons taking photo’s on library event days and tagging them so they appear on the library website…and photo blogs where people can leave comments.

Other web 2.0 tools not mentioned that some libraries are using are Twitter, Meebo (IM), Squidoo (Topic guides), OPAC 2.0 (user tags and RSS…actually I here moreso Museums experimenting with user generated tags), podcasts, startpage widgets, etc…

As far as a librarian community, the biblioblogosphere was mentioned, which Crawford at large tackled at one stage. Librarians networking through the blogosphere sharing advice on new tools and library methods, it astounds me that this enigmatic way of sharing of intellect has not caught on like wildfire in the enterprise, why the snail pace. Maybe it’s culture, and as Kathryn mentions librarians are web savvy, so it’s natural they adopt blogs in a big way.

BTW, I like the term the biblioblabosphere for librarians that tweet.

Also a mention of librarians using wikis for best Practices and documentation eg. Library Success.

And I totally identify with the librarians perpetual nature of finding things for people, almost like everyone’s personal information agent…I know being a librarian didn’t shape me this way, I’ve always been of character to be excited about the latest and share it with everyone.

I guess part of the job is evolving to less personal agent and more helping people construct their own news radars…personalisation and customisation.

The librarians role as facilitator is more than ever cemented as a guide and perhaps gardner in the, using the old school term, information highway. Librarians organise information to make it more usable, and the web has so much more information that a librarian now has a bigger job.
Some say the difference is people don’t need to go to the library as they can navigate the web themselves. But not all people:
- do they have a computer
- do they know how to use a computer
- do they know how to search for content and sources
- do they know of websites that specialise in a topic
- do they know how to determine authoritative sources
- do they have access to research sources like journals, etc…

The library itself is also changing, I now hear that some public libraries are ditching Dewey (DDC) for more bookshop like topics, other things:
- Community space and information
- Coffee shop and food
- Fast Track
- Couches
- PC’s
- Laptop area
- Learning centre (social space)
- Print/Bind/Photocopy
- 24 hr access

And the old things like:
- Record History (archive newspapers, books, etc…)
- Deposit library (local heritage)
- Borrow instead of buy

The question was also asked is Library 2.0 augmenting the social captial in an online social space, maybe a Facebook group, or a MySpace page, a meebo room, a Ning network, etc…in Perth I see local social networks like Loconut in a similar space.

Another question was asked will you be able to browse the stacks in SecondLife, is the idea to mimic a physical space. I tell you what, it sounds like a fun experience to visit a virtual supermarket like Kinset, pick things off the shelf and read some metadata about the product, calculate the cost. I suppose you could just look at your previous shopping receipts and select things so the present trip auto-fills up your trolley, but that may take out the fun.

Norg : Local Web 2.0

Just listened to an excellent On The Pod podcast by Duncan Riley (of TechCrunch) interviewing Bronwen Clune and Myles Eftos from the local startup Norgmedia (Norg stands for News Organisation).

As mentioned in the podcast and on TechCrunch this two person team have expanded from their beginnings as PerthNorg (which I posted back in Jan) to other Australian Capital cities, and they plan to take on the world.
They even have a brilliantly layed out Election07 topic page.

Now that they have a home page for Australia, their next move is to be able to cross post to all sites.

Just a recap a Norg is a citizen journalism type of site where you register a profile, from there you can post your own stories or write a blurb and link to a story, photo’s, video, just choose a category for your story. It reminds me of a news version of CommonGate, as you don’t have your own blog with it’s own name, well you kind of have a blog but it’s more a profile where all your posts can be seen (as well as a feed), your posts can also be seen on the category page you file it in (can’t remember if they also have tags).

There is also an active user ladder: Cadet, Level 1-5 Journalist, Top Level Journalist…not sure if this is based on frequency of posts, most commented or voted, but I like the idea of a type of authority and seriousness.

So this is an entirely user generated news site, I wonder in the future if there will be any resident blogs (actually I noticed they do eg. PerthMusic)

Anyway the homepage looks great, you have: Top News, Just In, Top Picture, Recent Comments…people can also vote for a story.

The podcast also mentions that you could have a Norg for the enterprise and education sectors…this isn’t quite an enterprise social network, but it is multi-user blogging, with a focus just on “news” not general stuff like social networks or usual blogs. But imagine the news part of a global companies intranet being a Norg, that’s just awesome.

A few other thoughts I had that was also mentioned in the podcast is mobile interaction, posting would be easy enough, even sending text, photo, video by email, but viewing a mobile version is a hard game. Not long ago when Australian footballer Ben Cousins was arrested it happened a couple of metres outside my work, I noticed this as I was walking to my car…this would of been an opportunity to capture some video or photo’s, write a blurb and post it to PerthNorg as it happens.

Once they are mobile, presence news would be a good feature (ala Twitter), being able to post a 140 character story by SMS.

A good idea to drive participation is competition’s or encouraging young journalists to go out on their local streets and do video interviews, etc…I’m not a journalist type person, but there a a cool bunch of skateboarders on my walk home that have actually got great moves, they band together in the local carpark. I read in the local paper about a skate competition in a near by suburb, this would be an ideal oppotunity to do a feature. This sort of thing might be bordering on current affairs or magazine type features, but it generates interest and has a stickiness value.

There was mention to bring back a more happening Classifieds section, I’d love to see this, especially a job hunting section. insiderPages and Yelp are a more general version, but a localised version would be great, as they mention in the podcast so far no-one in Australia has done this seriously. The only competition I see so far is, Loconut, the Perth local social network (kind of like a Facebook for Perth). This is kind of what Norg does, but is not focused on news, and more focused on community social networking, great for business and local community information…others are OnMyCity, Smalltown, BackFence, Baristanet, WickedLocal and H2otown.

FeedJournal : Newspaper version of your blog

A comment on my DailyMe post has prompted me to take another look at FeedJournal, which I posted about a while ago.

The good news is that it’s a web-based service now, and they also have a widget via Widgetbox.

Simply enter your blog feed to deliver a newspaper version of your blog.

Pity it doesn’t have OPML import, otherwise I could create a newspaper for my 10 or 20 favourite blogs…I guess I could splice them all into one feed…aha now I see that the free version only allows one feed.

The paid membership enable sections, logo, font choices, scrapping full-text from summary feeds and more.

My DailyMe post has lots more on personalisation and customisation; I’d like to see like memetracking, tags, personalisation, list of links as an appendix/footnotes, etc…like I said this could be a feature of an RSS Reader.

Blog Action Day : Global Warming using Uncertainty

This is really late for Blog Action Day, but better late than never.

Experimenting with communities and blogs at work, so I have joined our Sustainable Development group and started a blog…not that I know much about this topic (yet ;) but I figure if I post a couple of times a week I’ll get the momentum going, perhaps some discussion, ie comments, or better still others posting on their own blogs in response. Plus it means my blogging will help contribute awareness about the environment.

If I keep up this championing and persuade the CoP team to nuture key managers to blog, then I’d hope to see a viral thing happen where a blogosphere will manifest, let’s see.

This is opposed to a formal roll out, telling people they must share, here’s our latest tool (verion 2.0 conscription), eeek!

The idea is for it to happen naturally, people will have a place to read announcements and publishings by their managers and peers, and perhaps a knee jerk reaction can be augumented by offering them their own blog to post those complementing, opposing, and insightful thoughts, ideas, and arguments.

I just realised that as well as blogs within an OpenText CoP (ppt), you can also blog outside of a CoP, this way you are not limited to a topic blog (but then you can’t send or tag a blog post to appear in a CoP). I also successfully posted via email, along with subscribing by email, this is a plus as this is a familiar place for people…pity you can’t comment on a blog via email (you can do this with the discussion forums).

While I’m at it, the OpenText blogs used to have RSS output, suddenly I don’t see this anymore.
The other thing is that permalinks are buried, you have to click on an action menu and choose “view entry”, now who’s gonna do this…What results is that people will blog about a post someone wrote and point to their blog homepage instead…not good!
If they do successfully point to one of your posts, I wonder if you will be notified, as you can’t run an ego feed…there is a blog post metadata field called “references”, but I think this is for Shortcuts, not inlinks.

Whoa, I got carried away, I’ve hijacked the purpose of this blog post with my tech banter…so here is my contribution to Blog Action Day, or moreso my finding that I’d like to share.

Interesting argument about Global Warming using Uncertainty.

The proposition is that when faced with the uncertainty of global warming happening or not, the safest thing to do is to take action. The case in this clip is; whether it is really happening and whether humans are adding to it doesn’t really matter, that fact that we are uncertain leaves us no choice but to take a safe approach of “action”.

There are 2 possible situations nature is presenting:
- Climate Change is True or False

There are 2 choices that humans can make:
- Take or not take action

If we take action and eventually find global warming is false we have spent lots of money resulting in global economic depression.
If we take action and find global warming is true then it’s money well spent and we are helping save that planet, instead of helping its destruction.

If we don’t take action and eventually find global warming is false then we are happy.
If we don’t take action and find global warming is true, then this is the worse possible scenario, we will not only have a global economic depression, but a global catastrophe.

So when you do the maths; if you don’t take action the worst cast scenario is a global catastrophe, and if you do take action the worst case scenario is a global economic depression (still I wouldn’t say bad money spent).

So the arguement is that when it comes to the uncertainty of global warming, taking action is the safest bet.

Social network and graph ecology

There is movement in the social graph space…bringing “social awareness” to your email (and perhaps IM, VOIP), it’s being labelled Inbox 2.0, see posts by TechCrunch and Collaborative Thinking.

Generate tag clouds of friends associated with keywords or friends you most correspond with, etc…doesn’t sound too different than email mining to match experts (see my post from a while back on Microsoft Knowledge Network).

Using your social graph are the kind of things you can do with your social network buddies using apps like Socialistics or the Fuser Leaderboard.
Well now this social awareness is going to be applied to other buddy lists like email contacts.

NOTE: Your social graph extends beyond your immediate social network, it’s something I’ve mentioned before on “groupings”. Slice any data within the greater social network and find people and content by common interests eg. show me all the people in, eg. Facebook, who live in the same city as me, and use similar photo tags to me. This is using your social graph (actually using you) as a filter to discover. A good way to limit this would be doing the same graph mentioned above limited to just your friends network (ie. all your friends friends)…exclude/include mutual friends.

NOTE: the only social graph page I see in Facebook is the Network feature eg. I’m in the Australia network, you can’t create your own based on other commonalities you have with other Facebook users eg. a page on people with the same star sign, a page of people who use similar photo tags as you, a page of people who comment on the same comment walls as you, etc…

So it seems we will soon be getting social networks around email, which just means that it will be like Facebook, but the private message widget (a la email) is the focus. Once this takes off, then email will become just a component and other components will be added, which will eventually be a digital dashboard within a social network (kind of what Facebook is now).

I’ll never understand why Hotmail didn’t go beyond email, into a startpage and then connected into a social network.

This is all happening now and Facebook are leading, but their private message feature really isn’t as robust as email, they should look into buying out someone to bring real email into Facebook…not a 3rd party email widget, but an inhouse full featured email client.

We all know all of the above is going to happen with Google’s various components, they have everything in place. The difference here is that all the Google components are robust products not just lightweight widgets…they have an RSS Reader, email, IM/VOIP, documents, photo’s, calendar, blog, wiki (soon), video, notes, toolbar and various other products. These all come together as widgets on the Google startpage, but they are more than widgets, beyond the startpage dashboard view all these widgets are their own fully-fledged products, as I have mentioned above.

So we have components or products (and their widget versions), some of these like Gmail and IM have buddies (contacts list), then all of these are accessible on a digital dashboard (startpage), and lastly these startpages are connected in a social network (Google have some experience with this with Orkut, their social network product).

Google are going to be a competitor to Facebook, Netvibes and PageFlakes, but with each widget being a robust product on its own.

As we know your Google digital dashboard social network isn’t just about Google widgets, it’s open to 3rd party products from anywhere, as does iGoogle now, and even the more easier with the OpenSocial movement.

Actually I mentioned a while back that Google could be a greater Facebook, and is SocialStream perhaps this whole holisitic view.

The next step is how to cope with information and activity in a social network world…the answer to other tools like RSS Readers is we have our trend stats, personalistion/attention filters, and even social network RSS Readers that are helping with link sharing, feed recommendation, and connecting/communicating with your network. Lifestream services also fit into this picture, as do other multi-inbox services like Fuser who are taking a different approach.

The way Facebook copes with friend and greater network activity is via the mini feed and news feed, which doesn’t provide an RSS feed funnily enough.

This in effect is what RSS does, it keeps you updated on activity, only with blogs it’s more explicit, we publish and a new post is in the feed, in a network we publish but we also interact and action stuff (engaging with our network), all this clickstream is documented in your mini feed and an aggregate of all your friends in your news feed. So it’s updates for your publishings and your actions, and there is no reason why it couldn’t have RSS output. But they don’t seem to see this as a necessity as you don’t need an RSS Reader…soon enough when all networks have a news feed or mini feed, then I’d want to aggregate these to read them all in one feed…now that’s an idea for a product. Just like Lifestreams, we could have Activitystreams (maybe a clickstream service like Cluztr could get into this) across social networks and other websites you use. Infact Ziki and Plaxo Pulse, both lifestream services have an activity feed across all your services (but this is only your Ziki or Plaxo Pulse friends). Fuser, the multi-inbox attacks the same space of aggregating your social network friends into one central spot, so aggregating news feeds would be in the same realm.

Another movement in this space is not just your aggregated data, but moving it around, this means it needs to be free and portable. Widgets kind of enable this, but it’s more a window view of your data that lives elsewhere.
Chris Saad, in a recent podcast alludes to or speculates that social network and other personal web data (just like APML attention) will be portable via OpenID, your ID will be you on the web, not just for login authentication, but you and your data…that’s the ultimate goal for the social web ecology.

Things brings us full-circle back to social graphing which is being able to graph the groupings (or slice data) that you belong to in your immediate network and the social network service at large, or perhaps across the social network ecology of the whole web.

The reason we would social graph, is to discover who in my network or the whole network:
- lives within a 10km radius of me…in case of emergency I could blast them a message, video or a presence (tweet) about a fire in the vicinity.
- do I email (private msg), IM, SMS the most (similar to Fuser Leaderboard)
- have a status update with the term fire in the last 3 days
- are an expert in “cars” (via analysing how frequent they use this term, or perhaps by an explicit tag on their posts, or interest profile).

You can slice data anyway you like, to analyse social behaviour; but this is fun because it revolves around you. Not only that but we make inferences from this data and we can action things, just like your local council does a census and uses that data as statistics as a basis to help with urban and social planning. Only in a population census, it’s mostly close-ended data (where you have to fit into a box), so sometimes the analysis derived (and then actions) don’t correctly represent.

Anyway, now we can analyse network data, and make actions and decisions…via the network effect all this individual data is in aggregate, so why not let the people use the aggregate information to analyse the social ecology. It is essential to filter and see patterns to be able to understand more about our environment.
