Rootly : DIY RSS Reader

Rootly is a refined version of a newsmastering tool I’ve been looking for in a while…it is more about the presentation of feed content as a tabbed news page, rather than background remixing and delivery.
Basically a free version of what RSS2Page offers, and is a more DIY version of Congoo and nJuice.

You could say you can make your own single aggregator like Original Signal.

In essence Rootly allows you to create your own Google News type page using your own feed set.

Firstly, some other tools in this space:

MySyndicaat - very strong in every aspect, only the presentation isn’t as pleasing as Rootly

Technorati Favourites has tags, Blogdigger Groups has river of news, also limit by feed…others are kinja, feedbite, Fwicki and FeedCollectors.

kickRSS, SuprGlu and Feedpile, rssMix, feedblendr are one river of news stream.

Then we have our widget style via: Netvibes universe, PageFlakes PageCasts, Webjam, yourminis, Speedyfeed, FeedRaider.

Then we have Bozpages that has a river of news, widget style and also cloud style.

After all that, I realise I have listed these before on my lifestream post.

Rootly features

- Create your own tabs by adding your own feeds, lacks OPML input
- Create search feeds from searching across their massive feedset
- Pick from already made topics

I quickly created some tabs, all you do is click on a tab and read topic based news based on my feed set.
Each post also lists the source of the post, clicking this allows you to read all posts by this source.

NOTE: if you enter a spliced feed each item will have that spliced feed as the source, so it’s recommended to enter native feeds…again this would be made easier with an OPML import.

On each post you can comment, email and bookmark (save these within Rootly).
You can clone other people’s tabs and create a widget.

I’d like a tab that lists the latest from all my tabs.

OK we have a problem here, I can’t make my Rootly public, but it seems I can invite friends and also add Rootly friends, so it really is a social network, here’s my profile.

If Rootly (and another similar service Ozmozr) was more public this would make it a really good social network RSS Reader, see Hypeit, Genwi, NEooWs, feeds.reddit

  1. Hi there, thanks for the review. FYI, we have added OPML support yesterday, you might want to try that out :) .
