Newsvine : the evergreen social news blogging network
Newsvine has a new release of it’s service called Evergreen, basically it’s the new look and functionality Newsvine.
The first time I posted on Newsvine was in late 2005, so I thought an update was in order.
As you may know Newsvine is the most prolific Cit J site so far, it is a user blogging network where you can publish posts (articles) and clip posts (seeds).
View content by user, category, tag, user tag (tag cloud), source, location, etc…it’s like a mini blogosphere.
The social part is called “The Vine”, it also re-syndicates external news and auto-tags it, this part is called “The Wire”.
You could say other blogging networks like Gather, Sponit and CommonGate are similar in concept, but Newsvine, like other Cit J sites are more focused on publishing news type content.
Features
- external news (the wire)
- auto tagged external news
- blog network (the vine)
- clip external or internal articles (seed)
- this is almost like social bookmarks, but more like social clips eg. clipmarks
- for each post: comments (public or group or friend), tag, chat, rate, related articles
- user comments page
- a comments tracker
- Watchlist (inbuilt RSS Reader) to keep track of vine (user), wire (external), category or tag content
- Search
- personalisation of the front page with modules (widgets)
eg. external RSS feed widget
- view stories by a photo gallery…can’t remember if Daylife had something similar
- mobile version
- Live version
- private/public groups, eg. web 2.0 group, perhaps a group page could be like Zimbio, or GROU.PS
Could the Newsvine concept be the ultimate enterprise 2.0 knowledge sharing tool?
What they have is a:
- blogging, clipping and external news network…view content by source, user, topic (category or tag), etc…
- a comment network
- chat about an item
- rating
- groups
- front page
- etc…
Imagine a Newsvine for the workplace, I suppose content wouldn’t have to be news related, but such an extensive blogging network which is easy to use is the perfect knowledge sharing tool for the enterprise.
What would you add to a Newsvine type service to make it more enterprise focused?
Perhaps…
- a feed set gallery like BlogBridge Feed Library
- about page could have people tags or expert locator, like IBM or MS
NOTE: you can also discover experts by looking at content tags or searching and finding author’s (workers) that are prolific clippers and bloggers on a topic/s…also see Q&A part below.
- Q&A service like Yedda
- about page could have a presence indicator, see Talk-Now, or even micro-blogging like Twitter, what about putting these two together, see Hictu.
- what about adding friends as a public view and private messages or comments to a profile, this makes it more a social network
- the front page could become more of a dashbaoard or startpage
- Looking at the tag page “web 2.0″ (all users who tag posts “web 2.0) could be a component of a CoP (Community of Practice) site.
Newsvine are being more explicit by creating a formal group page for web 2.0 content…why…well the content doesn’t have to be tagged “web 2.0″ to be included.
Also a topic page could have a broad conept like Alternative Health & Wellness, if this is all you write about you don’t want to have to use this tag all the time.
A group can also have a moderator to make sure content is: accurate, authoritative, on topic…the moderator can keep an eye on the participation rate in order to measure the sustainability (if people don’t post to the group, then the group will die).
If the groups feature was used in the enterprise, much like Zimbio wikizines you could have other modules like: Forums, FAQ, document library, Q&A, wiki, link roll, etc…
What else is there: photo’s, video’s, podcasts, etc…
