EmailTwitter.com now has email updates on demand and direct messages

As I’ve mentioned I like using a cost effective method of using Twitter on the go, and this is by using EmailTwitter.com.

I can post updates to Twitter using my phone email, this is great…I can also do this using mail2twitter.

But where EmailTwitter.com shines is that once you have posted an update you get an auto-reply email listing the 5 latest updates from your friends (this has gone up from 1 to 5 since my last post…instant feedback, thanks guys…blog and you shall receive).

Another request of mine has also been added within 24 hours of my request, now you can send a blank email and receive the last 5 updates from your friends.

NOTE: If you haven’t registered you must include your login and password in the subject line eg. twitter johnt 1234.
If you have registered, the subject line can be left blank both when posting updates and when requesting friends updates.

A second method of requesting updates is sending a blank email to timeline@emailtwitter.com.

The final treat is direct messages via email, you don’t even have to use the direct message command.

Send Post

To: twitter@emailtwitter.com

Subject: twitter johnt 1234

Body: I like coffee

NOTE: If you have registered at emailtwitter.com you can leave the subject line blank

Receive last 5 updates UPDATE: now last 10 Tweets by default

To: twitter@emailtwitter.com

Subject: twitter johnt 1234

Body: [leave this blank]

NOTE: If you have registered at emailtwitter.com you can leave the subject line blank

OR

To: timeline@emailtwitter.com

Subject: twitter johnt 1234

Body: [leave this blank]

NOTE: If you have registered at emailtwitter.com you can leave the subject line blank

Specify how many updates posts you want (max. 20) UPDATE: see comment

To: timeline@emailtwitter.com

Subject: twitter johnt 1234

Body: 18

NOTE: If you have registered at emailtwitter.com you can leave the subject line blank

Specify how many updates posts you want and limited to a person (max. 20) UPDATE: see comment

To: timeline@emailtwitter.com

Subject: twitter johnt 1234

Body: 18 elsua

NOTE: If you have registered at emailtwitter.com you can leave the subject line blank

Send Direct Message

To: elsua@emailtwitter.com

Subject: twitter johnt 1234

Body: I heard your podcast the other day great stuff!

NOTE: If you have registered at emailtwitter.com you can leave the subject line blank

Feedback

Am I able to request how many updates I want to receive? UPDATE: see comment.
eg. last 5 updates, last 10 updates, last 100 updates
When using the timeline address we could use the “body field” to request the number of updates
eg.
To: timeline@emailtwitter.com
Subject: twitter johnt 1234
Body: 30

Can I request the last 5, 10, 100 updates limited to a selection of friends? UPDATE: see comment.
eg.
To: timeline@emailtwitter.com
Subject: twitter johnt 1234
Body: 30 elsua steverubel bokardo ChrisSaad

Or, can this be done on a time basis, ie. updates from friends in the 30mins, 60mins, 180mins, etc…
eg.
To: timeline@emailtwitter.com
Subject: twitter johnt 1234
Body: 30mins elsua steverubel bokardo ChrisSaad

Am I able to check if I have any direct messages? SEE UPDATE BELOW
eg.
To: direct@emailtwitter.com
Subject: twitter johnt 1234
Body: [leave this blank]

Receive Direct Messages : UPDATE 5/04/07

To: messages@emailtwitter.com

Subject: twitter johnt 1234

Body: [leave this blank]

NOTE: If you have registered at emailtwitter.com you can leave the subject line blank

  1. Thanks for the additional feedback! We’ve added support for retrieval of Direct IMs via e-mail. Try emailing ‘messages@emailtwitter.com’ and you’ll get a reply with your most recent incoming Direct IMs. If you’ve registered your source email address, there’s no need to include your twitter login/password in the email subject. Thanks!

  2. Many many thanks for all your work Elliot, you have made using Twitter on the go a realisation for those of us not using SMS or phone IM.

My only issue at the moment is that first thing in the morning I only get an update of my friends last 5 posts, whereas I’d like to see all the updates I’ve missed while I’ve been asleep.

Not sure if it is a difficult thing for us to be able to request the number of updates when we send a “timeline” email, entering the number in the body as I suggested.

OR, perhaps there can be numerous timeline email addresses:
    eg.
timeline10@emailtwitter.com - this will reply with last 10 updates
timeline50@emailtwitter.com - this will reply with last 50 updates
timeline100@emailtwitter.com - this will reply with last 100 updates

  3. EmailTwitter has been updated again, to support retrieval of timelines for a specific user, request a specific number of timeline updates (1 - 20), and return 10 items (up from 5) for timeline requests by default.

This functionality is available by emailing ‘timeline@emailtwitter.com’ with a message body of:

    COUNT (ex: 10)

    or:

    COUNT USERNAME (ex: 10 user123)

(A blank or malformed message body returns 10 timeline entries, the default.)

Thanks for the great ideas, hope this helps!
