After my post on AutoRoll, I thought about ways to get your blog listed elsewhere on the web.

This post does not include the type of tips like; post frequency, SEO, writing literal blog post titles, full-text vs. summary feeds, long posts vs. short posts, etc…this post is about what you can do to explicitly increase the amount of places that link to your blog post.

Ways to promote your blog elswhere

- Blog directory (Technorati Blog Directory)

- Personal Content Streams (Ziki, Lijit, mugshot)
- Search networks (Rollyo)
- Join lots of networks as your profile will always have a link to your blog
- Recommendation community (AutoRoll)
- Inter-blog posting (CreamAid)
- Inter-blog chatting (GeeSee)
- Appearing on a blogs blogroll
- Appearing on a public remixed feed stream (Feed Collectors, Feedburner Networks, Technorati Favourites, SuprGlu)
- Appearing on Public version of a RSS Reader (Bloglines, Feedshow, Alesti, Feedeye)
- A Widget gallery (MuseStorm, Blidget)
- A Toolbar button gallery (Google button gallery)
- Personal RSS Reader recommendation (Rojo, OutBrain)
- Social RSS Reader (feeds.reddit, Spokeo, Ozmozr)
- Appearing at a feed or OPML exchange (SYO, FeedVault, Feedshow)

- Appearing on a social bookmark service (del.icio.us)…write enaging posts for this to happen (or tag your own posts)
- Tags your posts (Technorati Tags)

Elsua points to AutoRoll which is in the vein of blog communities, recommendation or discovery like MyBlogLog, see more about community.

It traces the number of visits of each visitor (via cookies) on each weblog that has the Autoroll widget.
If the same person often visits blog A and blog B, then the widget on blog A will list a link to blog B, and vice versa.

This is like saying people who visit your blog also visit these blogs.

This is handy recommendation for you the blog owner and also for visitors of your blog.

Based on this recommendation your widget may list heaps of blogs, but it is further based on the number of visits from each visitor, ie. if a visitor/s visits blog A and blog B 5 times a week, and visits blog C once a month, then the widget on Blog A will have a link to blog B but may not have a link to blog C…based on this method the links could also be ranked.

Links to blogs that appear on your widget will only be other blogs that also have this widget (registered with AutoRoll), so it doesn’t encompass the whole blogosphere.

Another benefit of being part of the AutoRoll community is that my blog will be listed as a link on other blogs AutoRoll widgets, people clicking on my URL from these widgets on other blogs is an increase of traffic and potential subscribers to my blog.

This is kind of like a blogroll, but not designed by you, but designed by the readers of your blog…basically a recommendation blogroll.

Technorati

Recommended blogs is limited to blogs registered with AutoRoll, it doesn’t take into account all blogs in the blogosphere. Kind of like feed recommendation in Rojo is based on just the blogs within the Rojo service.
AutoRoll is about the visiting web and Rojo is about the subscription web.

AutoRoll is still building its community…what about a service like Technorati that already has a big community, they could offer a feed recommendation widget that does the same thing.
Reason being is that if I blog about “birds”, will the same people read other AutoRoll blogs…I’m assuming these people will read other “bird blogs” or animal blogs, but if these other blogs aren’t registered with AutoRoll is there anything to recommend.
People who read the “bird blog” may also read a “political blog” and this political blog maybe have an AutoRoll, so you may be stuck with this lousy recommendation.
My point is for recommendation to work you need a massive registery with breadth of topics.

In comparison, if 100,000 blogs on Technorati (this is a tiny amount of claimed blogs) had this widget, then there is a bigger pool and a bigger chance that I will be recommended similar blogs. People who visit the bird blog, may occassionally read a political blog, but they may read other bird blogs and animal blogs and more frequently.
The political blog won’t make it in my recommendations, but the bird and animal blogs will make it…but if the political blog was read just as often well this would make it to, giving you a colourful electic mix.
But it might not make it as the recommendation is based on all visitors of your blog, not just one.
So if 1000 visitors of your blog read other bird blogs and only 5 read political blogs just as often, these political blogs won’t be recommended as the frequency of visits is outnumbered.

NOTE: It would be good to log into your account and see a total recommendation list ranked, these political blogs would appear at the bottom of the list.

MyBlogLog

I could really see this being absorbed into the MyBlogLog widget.

At the moment you see Recent Readers of your blog from people (blogs) registered with the MyBlogLog community.

Firstly what about about giving you a list of other blogs in the MyBlogLog community that your Recent Readers have visited.

But this is still limited to visitors who are registered with a service.

More precise is that it could record any websurfer that reads a blog that has a MyBlogLog widget, and if those websurfers also read your blog (which has a MyBlogLog widget) then these other blogs they read may be listed in your widget.
