OPML inclusion

Check out KOZOPMLBROWSER…this is someones OPML Reader…NOTE: you can’t log in and make your own.

What they have done is made a OPML Directory…but instead of a boring outline look it seems more like a reader.
The contents is shown at the home level, or it is organised in folders…the contents can be just text, web links, RSS feeds (this launches a mini RSS Reader), or OPML URL’s.

That’s right, this massive OPML has OPML’s within it (again these can be organised in folders, contain just text, links, feeds or have OPML’s)…this is called OPML inclusion
…you could see this going on and on (My OPML points to another OPML which already points to an OPML, etc…)

So this Root OPML Directory is made up of text, links, feeds, and OPML’s…anytime the Root OPML is updated (where ever it lives, in an OPML editor somewhere) the additions are reflected in this version.

Also since this Root OPML has OPML’s within it, when ever these OPML’s are modified by their owners, the changes are automatically reflected.

In my previous post I referred to a blog that had it’s own OPML and how you could view it in an OPML Box on your blog sidebar. To see what it looks like in this tool, click on the OPML Geeks folder and double click on Cori Schlegel’s blog in OPML, this will list the posts from this blog organised in folders.

Imagine if you could make this browser for your blog sidebar…that would be cool…not only would I list an OPML of my blogroll, but I could list all my other OPML’s, and point to other people’s hosted OPML’s.
All I’d have to do is make a massive Root OPML, within this I could point to all my other OPML’s, and my friends OPML’s
…I’m not just limited to one OPML because now I can point to other OPML’s from within mine…this makes it an OPML Directory.

I like the idea instead of making a massive OPML from scratch that you can make heaps of smaller OPML’s then collate them all in a master or root OPML.

[ADDED: Also see Kosso’s OPML Manager.
Here you can view a selection of OPML’s or enter your own OPML URL (soon it will accept OPML local files).
Once loaded you can modify any of these OPML’s to make a new one…make new folders, text, HTML links, feeds, OPML links (inclusion).

So I guess you can browse an OPML URL and edit an OPML, it just won’t host it for you, it will save as code, so you will have to save this locally then host it in a URL

…it seems user accounts are coming soon, so maybe hosting is around the corner, or at least a workbench.

It’s basically the same as OPML Manager, but doesn’t have a public viewable outline tree page, or host the OPML URL…but it does have OPML inclusion which I haven’t seen yet.

The other thing with OPML Manager is that every time you want to make a new OPML you have to make a new user account, I’d like to be able to make many OPML’s within the one account.

Other editors I haven’t checked out:

OPML editor (desktop)
WOW OPML Browser (desktop)
OPML Workstation (web-based…yeah!)]

Back up blog via OPML

Check out this blog, it not only has a feed, but also an OPML.

If you put it in an OPML Browser, also here, you can see all posts by category…this is viewing a title index of your blog by category from elsewhere

…OPML is so portable.

A step further is to browse this in the sidebar of your blog, ie. make a title index by category for your own blog.

Whack the OPML in OPod and put that in your sidebar…now you will have an organised title index for your blog

…an old favourite tool is being revamped as we speak to also enable this functionality, they will also host it (no plug-ins, yeah).

So how do I enable my blog with an OPML?

…anyone

Related to this is publishing a blog via an OPML outliner, if you do this then you could easily use the OPML from your outliner as the OPML for your blog.

The link immediately above contains links showing this OPML is not only a title index for your blog, but also shows the contents…so it is your blog in the raw…great idea for a back up.

del.icio.us outline tree

I’d like to present my outline on a blog post or page on my blog.

That is, a published outline so people can collapse/expand my personal OPML directory
…of course you can put a link on your blog to where your outline is hosted like OPML Manager, but what about presenting your outline as a page or a post (for those blogs without pages) in your blog.

So changes I make in my outline are refreshed into my webpage.

But instead of adding items to my outlining tools I’d like this to be much simpler.

I’d like to add bookmarks to del.icio.us as usual and have this appear as an outline on my web page (always refreshed).

Only thing is del.icio.us accounts don’t have an OPML URL, and I would like to choose which tags go into the OPML URL, otherwise set up a specific account

…another limit is that del.icio.us doesn’t have sub-categories.

Aim

To have my outline presented as a published OPML Directory web page.

If del.icio.us had an outline view, then this would be my outlining tool, this is great as it is very easy and quick to add links to del.icio.us.

Then I would have to convert or transport my outline tree to a webpage, that is constantly updated.

Offer an RSS feed for my outline webpage (via del.icio.us feed for my whole account…also do this at the tag level)

Offer an OPML URL for my published OPML Directory, this would come from del.icio.us also (considering they enable an OPML URL for each account…or even each tag as well)
