I just realised you can create spliced feeds via the del.icio.us inbox. You can split you inbox into channels or categories, if you click on one of these you will just see this category feed of your inbox.

So this gives you the choice to read new items by feed or as a river of news by category, or as a gigantic river of news by every new item in the inbox.

Your inbox can have lots of categories that each contain lots of feeds…just like a light weight RSS reader, although if you do click on an individual feed it will launch to that site, you can’t view an individual feed within your inbox unless it is the only feed under a category heading.

So you have feeds for each item, a spliced feed for each category (by clicking on the category heading and clicking on the RSS icon), and a mega-spliced feed for your whole inbox.

You are not limited to subscribe to tags, you can also subscribe to users, even at the tag level.

What about search feeds, well these don’t have feeds anyway.

I’m trying to track RSS readers, but that means I have to load heaps of variation tags in my inbox.
Wheras if I do a search on tag:readers, it will find: reader, readers, rssreaders, rss_readers, etc…it’s kind of like a Ctrl-F search…see more

…what about returning the tag names, and expanding which one you want to look at…ie. sort results by tag, as well as the mixed results.

Anyway as you can see if we could generate search feeds then this would save us the trouble of having to subscribe to different variations of tags.

NOTE: In this example, I’d probably want to also search the tags: aggregator, syndicate, etc…

The problem is just say I was interested in RSS, but not RSS readers, well I would do a search like, “tag:RSS”.
But how would I avoid results like: rssreader, rssreaders, rss_reader, rss_readers, rssaggregator, rssaggregators, rssmetrics, rssaddons, rsssecurity, rssbusiness, rssmarketing, rssenterprise, it just goes on (with symbols and plurals there can be about 3 or 4 variations with each term).
NOTE: you would probably want to also cover the terms “feed”, “atom”, and “syndicate”.

Well as mentioned before, it would be good if it could return a tag set where the characters “RSS” occur in the tag name, and then the user can choose which tag they want to look at
…then you could choose your tags and add them to the inbox, and file them under a heading or category, and finally subscribe to the feed of this category (a spliced feed of all the tags you chose).

Or alternatively give a choice, to search just exact phrase for the term “tag:RSS”, then you would only get the result “RSS”, and not “rssreaders”, as it is asking for exactly the term “RSS”.

Or another choice is to search “tag:RSS NOT readers”, but then what about all the other terms you don’t want in your search, this would be a long search query.

Technorati now does full boolean searching…it already had OR, but now has added AND, NOT…no more hacks.

This is great news as now you can drill down to just what you want…I noticed boolean works in both the normal search and tag search.

The only thing I find wierd is that when I’m on the tag search page and I click options is provides 2 other links, “posts containing this text”, and “links to this URL”…now if you click on one of these the tab stays on tags, when it should move to the search tab, as you can’t perform these type of searches in the tag mode.

Although as mentioned before it would be great to search on a single URL in the tag mode (especially with Boolean)…then you could browse a category or tag from a blog, or even search within a the tag or category of a single blog.
