RSS Vendors (companies/services)

Read/Write Web has started a wiki on RSS vendors as an offshoot from some consultancy work…it’s not a definitive work (due to time constraints), it has just been put out there for people to add to…that’s what a wiki is for!

I took a glance and there is a lot missing from the list, maybe one day I’ll add to it.

RSS button clutter

It’s handy listing auto-subscription buttons of different feed readers on your blog, saving people the trouble of cutting and pasting a feed URL (or right-click, copy shortcut), then opening up your feed reader, then entering the URL to subscribe,
ie. instead of clicking on the RSS feed, click on the button of your feed reader and it will launch to your feed reader with feed URL ready for subscription.

Only thing is there are so many RSS readers out there, which buttons do you display, …I know I’m displaying a few of the popular one’s and it’s starting to get a bit cluttered (it’s also good to look at your Feedburner stat’s to see the feed readers people are using to read your stuff)

An alternative is to list a 3rd party intermediate page…here are a few I know of:

SoloSub
- the person clicks on the special feed button, and the page asks you to tick the reader you use.

Syndication Subscription Service
- as above

quickSUB
- hover over the the feed icon and a menu will appear from where you can choose from a list of feed readers

A related idea is to make it clear to people how to subscribe or be notified of changes, Common Craft suggests an easy to read link labelled subscription at the top of your blog…when clicked on there is an easy choice of email or RSS, and more options.
