Tagging alone is not a panacea for retrieval!
A great post on the future capabilities of tags and the idea of the semantic web.
I like this part on the fine line between blogs and bookmarking when it comes to traditional link blogging…from the post:
“…looks like the there is an intersection between bookmarking and weblogging, where ‘link blogging’, the process of creating content that is a link to a site with a short comment, rather than a full length blog post, is possibly better handled through a dedicated bookmarking system such as Del.icio.us or Wists posting to a blog via standard API’s while adding to a shared directory in parallel.”
Also mentions about tagging in context which leads to more precision and avoids ambiguity…giving the tags themselves a tag, eg. apple = fruit, where apple is the tag and fruit is the metatag…read on…or give it a try at Wists.
Another great post at Wetware (Spurl and Zniff creator) about the several elements or attributes consulted that make for optimum retrieval, not just by tag alone. It is explained that using user-based tags as the only element consulted in the retrieval process is not optimum because of the quality of the term or tag, so other methods used in unison can add value to the weight of the retrieval.
Elements consulted and weighted when processing search results:
User related
- tag itself
- clippings (snippet of the text the user includes in the bookmark)
- comment (user comments about the bookmark)
- trust in respected user
Other
- author mark-up of the web page
- word frequency
- link analysis

“When searching for something, you don’t want to end up empty handed just because nobody had thought of tagging a resource with the terms that you entered. The relevant terms must be seen as layers of information, where your tags and other terms that you have assigned play a central role, then comes information from other users - giving extra weight to those users that are “similar” to you (based on comparing previous behavior), then the page author and finally the “rest of the web”.”
