Labelling and arranging for future reference: control…

Lexonomy has a great primer on taxonomies for beginners like me…using tags or metadata for navigation/browsing purposes and/or for search purposes, …also has some great links.

Explains first step in a controlled vocabularly is synonym contol:
synonym ring

If you want to control the vocabularly even more then arrange the terms in a hierarchy: taxonomy

Finally, make it more sophisticated than a directory by establishing relationships between all these terms: thesaurus…which is a type of taxonomy.

Browsing Wikipedia I found the term Folk taxonomy

One day I’d like to get my head around all these terms and how they are related vertically and horizontally:

Ontology
Taxonomy
Classfication (faceted, etc…)
Category
Folder
Directory
Thesaurus
Folksonomy
Controlled Vocabulary (post, and pre-cordinate)

This post discusses that free-tagging is not automatically a folksonomy, but “is the activity that leads to a folksonomy.”

and more…

“The value of a controlled vocabularly is the vocabularly itself, not the process for getting there…a controlled vocabularly is a tool. On the other hand, a folksonomy is not a tool - it’s the by-product of a tool…”
